About Purvee Patel
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m Gujarati-Indian, born and raised in London (U.K), now living in Los Angeles since 06’. With a career history (and degree) in Finance & Economics, I decided to take a leap of faith and switch over to the right side (of my brain). I dreamed of something different; more people orientated, more connection, more creativity. I should say, the events industry found me, and I fell in love.
How did you get involved with planning events?
I was working as a financial analyst when a good friend heard me complaining and suggested I call this new local South Asian wedding business. I got myself an intern job in business development, marketing, branding, vendor relationship management. I loved it all, so I continued to reach out to other industry businesses with a freelance mindset and landed a ton of jobs: marketing, sales, CRM, social media management, event design, floral design as well as complete event planning & day-of coordination. I wanted to refine my planning skills so I continued on to contract with SoCal’s leading luxury South Asian wedding planners – 11 of them, over 8 years, producing over 300 events. Fast forward to today, here we are!
What's your favorite part of your job?
Everything! The moment a client decides to choose Pree Events, it begins a new chapter in their [love] story, one that is weaving us into their history forever. We take that seriously and work diligently to stay educated and top of the event industry trends, facts, and news. My left and right brain kick in big time, providing that analytical and methodical thinking as well as creative and artistic. You have to see the big picture and create, as well as using the law of logic and being super attentive to detail.
How do you unwind and relax when you're not working?
I love yoga – the Surya Namaskar is life 🙂 Being outdoors in nature – sunshine, ocean air, mountains, and palm trees all make me so happy. Life in L.A is quite special. Also, spending time with the love, video calling the London fam, listening to good music, reading, and the occasional Netflix binge.
You often work 18 to 22 hour days, sometimes 3-4 days in a row. How do you sustain the long working day?
Staying hydrated and yoga. Electrolyte drinks, nut mixes, and granola bars are a massive help. Also, easy-to-eat fruit like bananas or little orange cuties goes a long way.
What are your must-haves in your emergency kit for events?
I always carry my little Swiss army knife, a battery pack/phone charger, pens, zip ties, scissors, lighter, safety & bobby pins, chapstick, band-aids, hand sanitizer, tampons, and tissues. To name a few..
What do you feel are the most important elements in designing an event?
I encourage my clients to remain true to themselves so that they may create one-of-a-kind events that reflect both their inner and outer selves. There are no limits in the events business, so begin by setting the scene with a budget and finding a venue. Then we begin to dream up the ideas, colors, design, and overall experience.
What are your top 3 tips for clients who are just starting to plan their wedding or party?
- Take it one step at a time. Stay aware of your budget and understand what you can and can’t afford to ensure that you’re starting your planning off right.
- Focus on the things that matter to you, and not what everyone else thinks is best for you. Begin by prioritizing your needs vs dream goals.
- Save and organize all of your documents digitally so that you may access them whenever you need them. And of course 4. Hire a planner. We have spent years becoming experts in bringing you the best value; saving you time and money; we become your best friend, confidant, advisor, counselor, family mediator, designer, accountant, operations & logistics manager, quality controller, and then some!!!
What is your biggest event pet peeve?
Rude people. There is no justification for being mean and disrespectful. I have to practice thinking with empathy all the time as it helps me understand people and stay calm during the toughest of situations. Kindness truly goes a long way.
What makes your job worth it?
I am filled with gratitude because I know that it takes a village to produce a masterfully planned event. There are a million moving parts, and I work hard to ensure everyone is dedicated to creating the best yet, all for one reason: A happy client, hopefully, a friend for a lifetime!
